Fashion Film Review by Nick Knight and Raquel Couceiro
'ANY MINUTE I WILL CROSS THE LINE' is an animated fashion film inspired by a conversation between psychologist Thomas Mueller and a fellow research patient. Blurring the lines between reality and mythology, the film explores what relevance and influence our inner monologue has over our daily actions - existing to serve as a literal representation of our mind and imagination.
Marko Baković's 'CHANNELS SS22' takes pleasure in twisting and warping what would otherwise be seen as mundane actions. What would otherwise be quite dull footage of people walking down the street has been strangely warped and edited to create a composition filled with constant surprises... who thought a woman walking down the street could look so fabulously bizarre?
Who is shaping our future? ROMEO, ROMEO have asked through their recent series of digital couture creations, immortalised in their latest fashion film 'DigitalArmour'.
'Divine Comedy' is an animated short film mirroring a real-life event experienced by designer Olivia Berry when she fainted in front of an approaching train before being saved by a stranger. Including religious motifs to explore the concept of heaven and hell, God and death, Nik Gundersen's 'Divine Comedy' references a train station melted with a church (God), representing an unexplored stop (death), on a route due to a happenstance that no one experiences.
Playing with sound, movement, texture and light, Aqilah Amzi's 'GHOST' is a modern love letter expressed through dance, addressed to haunted spirits.
Jan Barcikowski's 'HEAD STRONG' tackles notions of masculinity in an everyday context, following its protagonist through quotidian tasks that flaunt an equal show of strength as they do emotional vigour.
Nico Daniels' 'Infant in the Sun' is an emotive exploration of youth, reflecting the infinite possibilities that lie ahead when you're young. Accompanied by a soothing soundtrack, the film follows the journey of three young people in a spaceship-resembling box that appears to be drifting through the sky.
Using dress as a visual cue, 'In Pursuit of Temples in the Sky' merges Eastern and Western culture through uniting the worlds of religion with sexuality. The film - which references the work of theatre stage director Dimitris Papaioanno in its tone and pace - acts as a trailer for a 392-page publication that uses photography to also indulge in similar themes.
Anna Radchenko's 'Lost Time' is a self-explanatory movement-led film that looks at time's fleeting moments. Perfectly encapsulated through its title, 'Lost Time' uses the malleability of sand as a metaphor for the passing of time while also referencing the literary works of philosopher Viktor Frank, cinematically citing man's need to add meaning to our life, no matter the context.
'Note to Self' acts as a 'glitchy and haunting' promotion for Ballet Rambert’s live stream, 'Note To Self'. Following main protagonist Eve on her journey, the short delves into memory and loss all while provoking and drawing empathy from the viewer.
'Out in the World' is a ten minute-long fashion film that follows its main protagonist dressed in a Gimp Suit, curled up on a spinning platform throughout the film's duration. Mimicking the style and look of Jordan Wolfson's robotic sculptures, Bart Seng Wen Long's fashion film forces its viewer to relax into a more voyeuristic approach, subjecting his audience to observe the protagonist's daring poses and sexually suggestive actions.
Shot on an iPhone, Manos Karanikolas' 'Phassion' is a testament to the poignant fact that anyone can create visual art, raising questions surrounding nature, technology, fashion and beauty, focusing on their role in society and in the modern world. Fashion's natural and simplistic beauty is reflected through Karanikolas' choice of using earth's natural beauty as the backdrop for his short.
'Prelude' is a narrated fashion film that subverts the viewer's gaze through a split-screen effect. The film's narration vocalises the two main protagonists' thoughts, letting the viewer into their hidden worlds bursting with ideas, hopes and ambitions to live a better, more fulfilling life.
Packed with contrasting visuals from industrial references to sea algae, Duda Carvalho's 'Supradis' deals with the extraterrestrial in a way that's relatable and familiar.
Zach Beech's 'The Maul Guccifest' takes a trip down a CGI recreation of London’s Commercial Road, with LA-based rapper sasha B. Over the course of the video, sasha uncovers many of East London’s hidden truths in pursuit of her destiny, all while on a FaceTime call with her real self.
The Makkina duo Inês von Bonhorst and Yuri Pirondi's 'The Movement' is a fashion film that uses dance to communicate human emotion. Accompanied by an intimate monologue disguised as a stream of consciousness regarding principles of thermodynamics - fashion, dance and dialogue come together to mirror natural cycles of nature.
