Fashion Film: Space 0330
Harrowingly abstract, oddly surreal, and at times hair-raising, Space 0330 is a fashion film by London-based director and photographer Jie Ni that exists on the brink between fantasy and reality. The film's unearth-like quality is echoed through its purposefully dated graphics; Microsoft Office 2003 Word Art styles are used in the slicing and collaging of imagery, manipulating both text and image alike. As words work their way to becoming clearer, one sentence reads 'beauty tilts to another world', confirming the alienesque quality that penetrates the short film.
The accompanying music that can be heard throughout is a rhythmic pattern, reminiscent of a confused heart-rate monitor, beats divided by more coded messages; 'after butterflies must be killed' and 'the vibrating jelly smashed the drizzle in the night' flash across the screen intermittently. The heartbeat sounds gently slow down towards the end before flat-lining entirely. The Dostoevsky quote springs to mind, 'life will find its very existence from the arts, imitating life through to death.'
