Transforming conventional fashion image-making, Nick Knight created a story entirely over video calls during the first lockdown with a stellar cast of supermodels including Bella Hadid.
In March 2020 during the UK lockdown, style bible British Vogue turned to visionary image-maker Nick Knight to find an alternative to the traditional photoshoot as fashion editorials ground to a halt with the industry instructed to work from home. Knight persuaded the publication to create an editorial story and fashion film over a series of video calls.
Joined by stylist Kate Phelan, make-up artist Val Garland and hair stylist Sam McKnight, Knight directs models Bella Hadid, Fran Summers, Anok Yai, Jill Kortleve, Ugbad Abdi, Xiao Wen Ju, Abby Champion and Lulu Tenney in a unique remote photoshoot as each call in from their living rooms, bedrooms and gardens. Having each received a box of A/W 20's most mesmerising gowns by Molly Goddard, Chanel, Valentino and more, the models create their individual beauty looks with instruction from Garland and McKnight, with the entire process captured on film.
In conversation with image-maker Nick Knight, stylist Kate Phelan talks about creating a fashion editorial story over Zoom and remotely styling showstopper A/W 20 looks by Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Molly Goddard and more, during a global pandemic. They also discuss whether the Zoom fashion shoot is here to stay, and how the role of the fashion stylist has evolved over recent months.
