Anderson is originally from Northern Ireland. After first pursuing a career in acting, he subsequently fell in love with stage costumes and went on to graduate in menswear from the London College of Fashion. JW Anderson's accolades include: British Fashion Awards for Emerging Talent, Ready-to-Wear (2012), New Establishment Award (2013) and Menswear Designer of the Year (2014). At the 2015 British Fashion Awards the brand received a historic double award for Menswear Designer of the Year and Womenswear Designer of the Year, the first time any brand has ever won both awards at the same time. At the 2017 British Fashion Awards the brand received Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Luxury group LVMH acquired a minority stake in the brand in 2013, and appointed Anderson as creative director of Spanish brand Loewe. Anderson was previously creative director of Sunspel from 2010 to 2014.

In 2015, Anderson was incorporated as a permanent jury member for the LVMH Prize and was named a trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum by former UK prime minister Theresa May in 2019.
