Luella S/S 2001. It was a beaded key ring made by Katie Hillier for Katie Grand that first connected Luella Bartley and Hillier. Appropriately, the first items Hillier made for Bartley, who at the time was running her Luella label, were beaded belts with ribbon fringing. They appeared in this show, an ode to the 1980s, which featured The Go-Go’s on the soundtrack. Similar styles appeared a year later in the S/S 2002 show, which paid tribute to the American West, and was soundtracked by “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and “Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliott.

New York graffiti: This “Katie + Luella” sign appeared mysteriously on Lafayette Street between Bleecker and Bond Streets during the preparation for the first show that Hillier and Bartley staged for Marc by Marc Jacobs for F/W 2014. Hillier, who photographed the happy surprise, says, “It was on our walk to and from the office and our hotel! It was awesome!”

A spread from Iris Van Herpen and Philip Beesley’s chapter in Fashion Together, published by Rizzoli. Material samples appear alongside an editorial image of Van Herpen’s Magnetic Motion collection, S/S 2015. Shown at Paris Fashion Week, the collecton explored the interplay of magnetic forces. Beesley contributed ten dresses to the collection, which saw polymer, crystal, and leather components combined into interlinking 3-D fabric structures. This dress, look nine from the collection, was photographed by Mathieu César.
Although Iris Van Herpen is based in the Netherlands and Philip Beesley is in Canada, the pair stay in constant communication, exchanging ideas and new materials regularly. Here, they are pictured during one of their face-to-face planning sessions in Beesley’s studio.

A tiny torn fragment of an envelope, used by Vivienne Westwood for sketching. Westwood is a committed environmentalist. In her efforts to save paper, she regularly draws and writes on any scraps of paper she can find, even receipts.

The final spread in Fashion Together, from Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler’s chapter. It shows campaigns by Juergen Teller for the Westwood brand. On the left is F/W 2011 on the right is S/S 16. I wanted to end the book with the image of Andreas dressed as a bride - it’s a little nod to how fashion shows traditionally end with a brand. It’s a tiny detail I’m sure no one will notice but it makes me smile.
Lou Stoppard signing off! Thanks for following. I hope you’ve enjoyed by posts and a little look into my debut book, Fashion Together. A big thanks to all the duos featured. Also, shameless plug, you can buy the book from the SHOWstudio shop!
