And then once we were bored of each other, we started taking photos of our friends,” says Alas. These personal Polaroids (this page of Alas, opposite page of Piggott) were shot a few years after they met, from about 1998 to 2000.

Thom Browne curated the S/S 2016 issue of A Magazine Curated By, a title that works with a different designer on each new release. Stephen Jones contributed these visuals, made in collaboration with embroidery masters Lesage, which feature archival photographs of Black Ascot. The event occurred in 1910 because King Edward VII, an avid race goer, had died just weeks before. All attendees wore full mourning dress. Jones showed the images to Browne ahead of his F/W 2015 mourning-themed shows. “Since the very start of my life in millinery, these amazing photographs have been a constant source of inspiration. The drama, the silhouettes, the hats!” wrote Jones in the magazine.
