Inside Gareth Pugh’s London studio. Shot by Andrew Smith. While Hogben’s films for Pugh have an epic, otherworldly feel, often they are made on small budgets using props made in the studio. This model was used for a 2011 film made by Hogben for Pugh for his show as guest designer at the 79th Pitti Immagine trade show held in Florence, Italy. The collection drew inspiration from religious iconography and Florentine opulence and the film was projected onto the ceiling of a fourteenth-century church. “Ruth bought a little projector so you could test the film on our ceiling, so I spent a long time lying on our living room floor,” laughs Pugh.

Philip Treacy on Isabella Blow in conversation with Lou Stoppard in Fashion Together, published by Rizzoli

Treacy and Blow’s collaboration began when he was still a millinery student and she commissioned him to make her wedding hat—a gold lace headdress worn over a flesh-coloured wimple, styled with a purple velvet robe featuring hand-embroidered trompe-l’oeil necklaces. She married Detmar Blow at Gloucester Cathedral in 1989. In 2007, her funeral was held at the same location.

A sketch by Andy Warhol inspired this 2003 hat by Treacy, which turned the artist’s 2-D drawings into dancing 3-D hats that move as the wearer walks and gestures. The hat was worn by Blow, with an Alexander McQueen for Givenchy kimono coat, to Royal Ascot, when she and Treacy were invited for lunch by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. “Isabella was so excited because we went to the paddock with the Duke to judge the best turned out horse,” recalls Treacy. The hat sits on the mannequin used to craft Lady Gaga’s Madame Tussauds waxwork. Gaga is a friend and collaborator of Treacy’s and regularly takes inspiration from Blow’s style.

“She was incredibly funny,” recalls Treacy of Blow. “We’d laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh.” The pair were captured by Kevin Davies on set on a shoot for Harpers & Queen in 2002.
