Vilmart Coeur de Cuvée 2003 - 'As always, this comes from 50-year-old vines in the vineyard of Les Blanches Voies, and it's composed of 80 percent chardonnay and 20 percent pinot noir. While it's recognizably a Vilmart wine, it's unusually assertive in character, with the elevated ripeness of the vintage giving it a full body and rich, expansive flavors. Its oxidative breadth and aldehydic aromas on the nose are reminiscent of Selosse's wines from the same vintage, if without quite the same complexity, feeling big and bold yet sleekly focused. On the palate, the flavors are ripe without being roasted or blowsy, and the wine's harmony and structure allow it to feel vibrant and energetic: due to the unusually high ripeness of the vintage, Laurent Champs dosed this lower than usual, under 6 g/l, which seems ideal. It's already expressive now, although there seems to be no hurry to drink it—this bottle was disgorged in July of 2010, and even a year and a half later, the fruit is fresh and primary, showing the exuberance of youth. This is an excellent 2003, and it will be fascinating to watch it evolve.' Peter Liem, wine critic
