The American shopping mall is the stuff of pop-culture legend. First rising to popularity in the 1950s, malls would go on to become megastructures that at their peak were akin to churches of capitalism. As shopping switched from IRL to online, today there is a bittersweet nostalgia when thinking of the mega-malls of yore. No one knows this better than American designer Shayne Oliver who is bringing the shopping mall to Berlin with his immersive exhibition 'The Mall of Anonymous'. Held at Berlin’s Schinkel Pavillon, the interactive sculpture will also showcase the three brands that make-up the recently established Shayne Oliver Group.
Last month, Oliver presented Anonymous Club Collection 02 (starring fellow designer Stefano Pilati) with an announcement that the brand would be one of three lines making up the Shayne Oliver Group. The other two being Shayne Oliver a conceptual luxury brand, and As Seen by Shayne Oliver (ASSO), a lineup of elevated and twisted basics. The three brands are central to 'The Mall of Anonymous' which has been split up into three sections dedicated to each one.
Created in collaboration with curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen the interactive space examines the mall as a complex arena devoted to capitalism as well as a centre for community building. Examining themes of class, consumerism, and identity, the exhibition is Oliver’s first step at showcasing the newly established fashion group. As the co-founder of Hood by Air, Oliver is no stranger to exploring complex themes through fashion. After all, the cult favourite brand revolutionised the luxury fashion space by merging ideas of inclusivity, gender identity, and subculture.
The 'Mall Of Anonymous' is on now at the Schinkel Pavillon until March 2024.
