Peter Saville RDI CBE
Graphic Designer
Art Director
Peter Saville RDI CBE is a graphic designer and artist born in 1955, in Manchester.
Saville's decades-long practice has consistently been recognised for merging aspects of both art and design, resulting in a unique contribution to culture. In 1978, Saville co-founded the renowned independent UK label Factory Records - of which he was also art director - allowing him to access an audience through pop music best seen through the series of record sleeves he created for Joy Division and New Order between 1979 and 1993.
Saville's designs during this period notably broke all the rules of traditional graphic design, as they frequently omitted information about artists or titles. Along with other influential Factory artists, Saville worked to communicate ideas, aesthetics and values to a formative audience - tropes that saw Saville work across a variety of creative disciplines as he continued to create work across music, fashion and culture. Saville has also delivered other projects for Barbican, Centre Pompidou Paris, Dior, Givenchy, Jil Sander, Kilgour, Pulp, Roxy Music, Stella McCartney, Suede, the Whitechapel Gallery and Yohji Yamamoto. Saville has developed products in collaboration with adidas, Lacoste, Paco Rabanne, Raf Simons, Uniqlo and Umbro.
Recent high-profile projects include the re-branding of Calvin Klein, Courrèges, Burberry and FERRAGAMO. He is also a consultant to Kvadrat, LoveFrom, The Shed NYC and Warner Music Group. In addition to this, Saville's practice also encompasses consultancy for the public sector and for a decade, beginning in 2004, he played a strategic role in the economic regeneration and cultural renaissance of his home city of Manchester as consultant creative director to the City Council. As well as advising the city on perception and communication, he was and remains an artistic advisor to the critically acclaimed Manchester International Festival. His achievements were celebrated in The Peter Saville Show at the Design Museum in London in 2003 - that same year, Saville's first monograph was published by Frieze. His first major show in a contemporary art museum was at the Migros Museum in Zurich in 2005 - he continues to exhibit internationally.
Saville has three D&AD Silver awards, honorary doctorates from Manchester Metropolitan University and University of the Arts London, he is a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) and won the London Design Medal in 2013. In 2020, he received the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in recognition of the positive impact of his work.
Saville co-founded SHOWstudio with long-time collaborator Nick Knight in 2000.
