In 2023, the pressures on young independent designers remain as harsh as ever, making it near-impossible for emerging talent to make and sell work. Despite it known that fashion's favourite wholesale system is crumbling, little are in a position to do anything about it, meaning the crippling financial burden on young creatives often leaves people questioning an industry they've desired to be a part of for so long.
Although independent fashion design pop-ups may not come with a fix-all solution, the recent surge in these small-scale events are becoming a favoured way for designers to not only have autonomy of their work but also their finances. They also give the newfound opportunity to establish a relationship with those who attend and buy their work; an approach SHOWstudio unanimously supports.
The latest fashion design popup to take place will happen this weekend at Hackney's fashion-forward Stokey Popup space. The event will showcase a selection of designs from local artists and fashion creatives from the following designers:
- Sulk Knitwear by Sarah Beastley
- Pig Ignorant by Martin Ben Duncan
- Úna Hayde
- Oh Lydia Intimates
- Croí Meala
- Hotel Elma
- 1800 Gallons by ethical denim designer Emily Tan Hooi Mei
- Making Ends Meet by Aimee Determann
- Audrey Vallens
- Alexandra Bottenberg
- IS.EAGAN
Whatever your plans are this weekend, make sure to find yourself at Stokey Popup for all the above and more.
