Grimes and Digital Fashion Powerhouse Auroboros Team up for Metaverse Fashion Week
When the world renowned musician Grimes promoted her album Miss Anthropocene in 2020, she decided to do so through her digital avatar War Nymph. The virtual being, which was first revealed to the world as a cherub-like baby, fast grew into a teenager, clad in a gold Balenciaga S/S 20 ballgown for the cover of The Face magazine. Later that year, she judged an avatar-based music competition, continuing to champion URL. This week, as the first Metaverse Fashion Week takes place inside the virtual world Decentraland, Grimes will host a special virtual performance with the digital fashion house Auroboros.
Over the past two years, digital fashion and avatars have taken music, art and fashion by storm. Online, you can be whoever you want to be, and dress in digital wears by Gucci, Balenciaga or Stefan Cooke for a fraction of the real life price. The developing Metaverse - a universe of digital and physical hybrid spaces - has been accelerated by the pandemic when people looked for new avenues for personal expression, cemented by Mark Zuckerberg changing Facebook's name to Meta. Designed by Paula Sello and Alissa Aulbekova in London, Auroboros were the first brand to show a completely digital fashion collection at a global fashion week, with a dress which anyone could try on for free using a filter on the social media app Snapchat. Now, they're launching their new Vault Community as part of Metaverse Fashion Week with the curated digital luxury NFT platform UNXD, and have enlisted Grimes to perform to mark the occasion.
Drawing influence from the celestial, organic forms of the Biomimicry collection presented last year, Auroboros have created a 360 immersive soundscape, featuring a floating stage, light show and AI technology. Grimes, in avatar form, will perform in an Auroboros 'Mystique' bodysuit.
