Live from London, Calum Knight and Hetty Mahlich review the A/W 21 womenswear season, covering the key themes which defined the Paris, Milan and London shows. With the fashion industry having experienced irreversible change over the past 12 months, this season saw designers engaging in a renewed relationship with clothes. Marked by the overarching theme of re-emergence, designers were looking at protection, dressing up and time travel.

The bodysuit reigned supreme at Prada, Miu Miu and Rick Owens, as a distinct awareness of oneself trickled into Matthew Williams's assertive debut runway show for Givenchy. Halpern, Kim Jones at Fendi and Moschino were optimistic for post-pandemic dressing up, whilst as Louis Vuitton and Kiko Kostadinov made a case for female empowerment set in a new dimension.

Meanwhile, other designers came back down to earth and found safety in their brand DNA; Marine Serre and Chanel being case in point. Finding solidarity with other parts of the creative industry hit hard by the pandemic, Dries Van Noten and Valentino offered moving presentations within closed theatre spaces, reminding us of the human connections we miss so much.
