American Harper’s Bazaar, October 1992, ‘Petal Pushers’, Kate Moss & Christy Turlington by Steven Klein, Make-up: Kevyn Aucoin (Photograph taken at Hyman Archive). ‘The overall appearance is very casual, but if those center partings weren’t strategically placed, the look would be totally different,’ Sam McKnight. I always remember this being the earliest editorial in Sam’s archive that I could find that featured a very young Kate Moss. This was published 6 months before her first British Vogue front cover. - Tory Turk, Archivist for Sam McKnight
The Face, July 1993 ‘The Trying Game’, Jaye Davidson by Albert Watson, Make-up: Val Garland. Styling: Karl and Derick (Photograph taken at Hyman Archive) I bet there is a great story behind this image. The clips in Crying Game actor Jaye Davidson’s hair strengthen the attitude created by his nearly finished cigarette and intense stare. It’s obvious why this was chosen as the front cover. - Tory Turk, Archivist for Sam McKnight
American Harper’s Bazaar, March 1994, ‘Love’, Nadja Auermann and Alexandre Bougault. Make-up: Fulvia Farolfi (Photograph taken at Hyman Archive) This shoot features Nadja Auermann and Alexandre Bougault frolicking and “in deep” in St Barts. The right-hand page was just a loose tear in Sam’s archive, as I worked through the archive it was one of the tears that was left unsorted. I will never forget finding this spread when flicking through a random Harper’s Bazaar, Nadja’s angel blond hair jumped out. Now, I think of this image when I look at the British Vogue June 2013 Kate Moss St Barts shoot, that Sam also worked on with Patrick Demarchelier. - Tory Turk, Archivist for Sam McKnight
American Vogue, September 1994, ‘Body Heat’, Irina Pantaeva by Arthur Elgort, Make-up: Mary Greenwell, Fashion Editor: Camilla Nickerson (Photograph taken at Hyman Archive) “The softer side of technoglamour means smokey eyes, sleek hair, and high-shine red lips.” Sam has helped create so many great characters. I particularly loved the ones I discovered in his 1990s American Vogue editorials. This narratives’ futuristic protagonist is so fun. We follow Irina, wearing an Autumn/Winter trend 1994 trend for mixing “chic shapes with high-tech touches”, as she explores various strange locations including an arcade and aquarium. - Tory Turk, Archivist for Sam McKnight
British Vogue, April 1995, ‘See you in Miami’, Bridget Hall by Ellen Von Unwerth. Make-up: Fulvia Farolfi, Fashion Editor: Lucinda Chambers. (Photograph taken at Hyman Archive) This is one of my favourite of Sam’s shoots. This is the image I want to take to the hairdresser and say, “I want to look like this”. I was so pleased when Sam selected images, from this editorial, for the book Hair by Sam McKnight. - Tory Turk, Archivist for Sam McKnight
