Tim Blanks: Jean-Paul Gaultier S/S 94
'If there was some kind of global calamity, which, of course, we're looking at right now, you could imagine ... people [creating] for themselves from whatever was left ... and putting [it] all together into a new story for a new age - I think that's what Gaultier managed to do.'
The inimitable editor-at-large Tim Blanks dives into his must-see shows of fashion past. Here he selects Jean-Paul Gaultier’s S/S 94 offering. Titled Le Tatouage, with the tattoo (surprise!) forming the visual motif of the collection, Blanks recalls the enfant terrible’s distinct combination of the spiritual, the carnal and social commentary through embracing marginalised communities; and talks through Gaultier's notable approach to casting, mixing supermodels with street-cast 'crusties'. He also reminds us not to take Gaultier’s genius for granted - unthinkable!
