Tim Blanks: Alexander McQueen S/S 98
'Beauty and horror were the twin poles of [Alexander McQueen's] design. He would make something beautiful and then corrupt it.'
Venerable editor-at-large Tim Blanks dives into his must-see shows from fashion past, selecting Alexander McQueen's S/S 98 Untitled collection (previously titled Golden Showers, in irreverent reference to McQueen's sponsorship from American Express). Blanks notes the dramatic staging of the collection, which 'must have had 100 looks'. For the first two thirds of the show, models walked over glowing white water tanks, yet for the rousing final section, the tanks flooded with dark liquid and the models paraded through a yellow-hued rainstorm to the strains of Ann Peebles' I Can't Stand The Rain underlaid with the Jaws soundtrack.
