Day 5: Willy Ndatira
For Day 5 of the designer and creative consultant's @SHOWstudio takeover in collaboration with designer Hussein Alusch, Willy Ndatira explored the issue of Instagram censorship and a bygone golden era of print magazines.
Ndatira showcased online art show and visual essay Instagram’s Shadow, focusing on the erasure of the LGBTQ community and the shaming of women’s bodies via social media censorship.
Enlisting the help of rare magazine collector Sean Tay, SHOWstudio gets a glimpse into Martin Margiela’s 2005 Believe It or Not newspaper, a faux tabloid in which the designer launched his Autumn/Winter 2005 collection.
Continuing on with the theme of printed matter, Ndatira uncovered a gem of a documentary: Inside the Great Magazines. Shot in the 1990s, the film explores the powerful cultural influence magazines had on society and politics in a pre-smartphone era. Pulling back the curtain on the inner workings of Time, Rolling Stone, VICE, Playboy and more, we are able to see a bygone era in which print wielded immense power.

Inside the Great Magazines takes us into the editor's suite, to the photo shoots and on location with greatest magazines in the world. From the established players like Time, Paris Match, and Rolling Stone, to upstarts that are defining the cutting-edge like Colors and Vice, the inner workings of magazines is captured and revealed. From their European origins to the current popularity, the series explores the powerful influence magazines on our social, political and culture.
Note: Inside the Great Magazine was filmed during the late 90s which was the Golden Age of magazines and their influence (pre digital media, smart phones etc) which makes the documentary that much more interesting.
