- How would you describe what you do?
Rian Phin: I design clothes and talk about Black American pasts and futures.
- What's your background?
RP: BA in communication, writing and talking about fashion, race and gender for eight years.
- What inspires you?
RP: Fear and connectivity.
- What is the ambition behind your practice?
RP: Connecting to the past and the future at once.
- What did you hope to convey with your Bodies Of Knowledge film?
RP: For the idea of the 'breast, I’ve designed a two-piece corseted garment based on maternity and cradle-boarding, Florida sugarcane harvesting, stillness in life, and being bound and anchored to earth as a nurturer. We exist trapped between moving forward from the past, and time moving backward toward us, weighed down by our ability to lay claim to the victory of harvest.
