It’s no secret that SHOWstudio loves Juergen Teller. What’s not to adore? Scroll through his SHOWstudio In Camera interview from 2004, and find brilliant nuggets of blunt Germanic witticisms. When one curious watcher asked what things he keeps private, Teller’s answer was simply brilliant: ‘That is private.’ It turns out that Ferragamo loves him just as much, releasing their fourth consecutive campaign shot by the photographer.
Photographed around Villa Mangiacane in Tuscany, Teller’s stripped-down style captures models lounge around against Renaissance-style surroundings. ‘We’re taking something from the past and mixing it with something that feels very modern,’ explained Maximilian Davis, the brand’s creative director.
Ballet shoes, reimagined as pointed toe flats and thong heels, are positioned against weathered plaster walls and fading frescos. Supple leather coats and the brand’s carry-all Gancini bag bring a modern twist to a timeless material. ‘We wanted to show the DNA of Ferragamo in a real and immediate moment,’ said Davis. ‘It’s about showing the elegant classicism of the brand, but making it a little more perverse, a little more playful.’
While SHOWstudio's fashion critic M-C Hill may not have enjoyed the campaign as much, this writer thoroughly enjoyed it. Drawing on the label’s rich heritage, the campaign builds on Davis’ legacy. Weaving together the brand’s past and present, Davis has forged a brilliant future for Ferragamo. And who better to capture that than Juergen Teller?
