When Prada unveiled their first nylon bags in 1984, it was nothing short of a fashion revolution. In a sea of leather, suede, and velvet evening bags, Miuccia Prada—forever a cultural contrarian—ushered in a new era merging utility and luxury. Fast forward four decades, and Prada continues to innovate, with the Re-Nylon series proving that style and sustainability can coexist seamlessly in their third collaboration with National Geographic CreativeWorks.
The series of four films stars Academy Award-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch and Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink as they embark on a global journey to raise awareness of ocean conservation. The campaign is part of the Prada Group’s SEA BEYOND initiative, created in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. With the fashion industry under constant scrutiny as one of the biggest contributors to global pollution, SEA BEYOND not only aims to promote ocean literacy worldwide but has also expanded to support scientific research.
In the debut episode, Cumberbatch explores the Arctic’s ecosystem and examines the devastating impact of plastic pollution on wildlife. He is joined by SEA BEYOND ambassadors Valentino Gottlieb and Giovanni Chimienti, as well as local National Geographic expert Carl Höjma. The film highlights initiatives by local fisheries to reduce waste after years of unsustainable practices, including the collection of 'ghost nets'—plastic fishing gear lost or abandoned in the ocean. These recovered materials are then transformed into nylon for brands like Prada.
In 2020, Prada’s Re-Nylon collection reintroduced the brand’s iconic hallmark with a sustainable slant. Entirely crafted from ECONYL® yarn, produced through a scientifically complex process of depolymerisation, purification, and transformation into new threads, the collection keeps plastics out of the oceans while reducing the production of virgin nylon yarn. With 1% of proceeds from the sale of Re-Nylon pieces benefiting SEA BEYOND, Prada will continue to expand its goal of sustainable education worldwide.
