When it comes to collaborating no one was as frequent as Virgil Abloh. From Ikea to Evian, the late visionary and polymath never shied away from working with others. Even after his unexpected passing in 2021 from cardiac angiosarcoma, collaborations with the Off-White founder were still dropping. The latest brand to join this extensive list of collaborators is Italian furniture brand Cassina. First developed in 2020, the two creative forces were inspired by childlike play to create modular blocks dubbed Modular Imagination. Keeping creativity in mind the designs were made to be stacked together, adding a playful element to any interior space.

No stranger to designer collaborations — Cassina previously worked with Karl Lagarfeld on a collection of chairs — it was Abloh's master's degree in Architecture and penchants for graphic-design that made him the perfect partner for the furniture brand. Produced in two sizes, each textured block is shaped as perfect cubes to mimic industrial building blocks. Crafted from soft polyurethane encourages tactility and movement around the space. In line with Abloh’s affinity for bold logos, each side of the cube is imprinted with a ‘Cassina-Abloh’ logo. While coated in sleek black elastomer, each cube is fitted with vibrant orange feet inspired by the brand’s flagship store in Milan.

To celebrate the collection's launch an installation, also dubbed Modular Imagination, will be presented at Cassina's Milan flagship. Not dissimilar to the immersive runway sets of Virgil's Louis Vuitton menswear collections, the showroom will be enveloped in a sea of orange with the only contrast being the matte black cubes placed around the space. The installation will be open to the public during both Milan Design Week and Men’s Fashion Week, with the collection available for purchase in-store and online.
