When Bottega Veneta revived BUTT magazine in 2022, it was to the elation of its queer cult following and intrigued newcomers alike. First launched in 2001 by Gert Jonkers and Jop van Bennekom—co-founders of Fantastic Man—BUTT’s signature shade of pink, raw reportage, and provocative photography was in stark contrast to the glossy pages of its sanitised contemporaries.
With a legacy showcasing the risqué work of some of today’s biggest image-makers, including Wolfgang Tillmans and Alasdair McLellan, BUTT’s pages became a touchstone for unapologetic queer expression, blending candid interviews and raw portraits celebrating individuality and authenticity.
While BUTT has seen no shortage of big names grace its pink-hued pages—from Rick Owens to Marc Jacobs—Issue 35, Hot Splash, promises to be the boldest yet (not that size matters, of course). Pop star Troye Sivan strips down in a seedy motel to talk poppers and his infamous Sweat Tour with Charli XCX, while Honey Dijon and playwright du jour Jeremy O. Harris discuss queer creativity, nightlife, and pushing cultural boundaries.
Cover star Giorgi Kikonishvili, who’s made a name for himself in Tbilisi for his parties and protests, dives into how new anti-LGBT legislation in Georgia is reshaping the fight for queer rights, and what activism looks like in a rapidly changing political climate.
The issue also features the last interview with artist and American literary icon Gary Indiana before he passed in October from cancer. Perverse, provocative, and fearless, the writer’s sharp critiques of art and culture were only matched by his introspective sensitivity to the complexities of queer identity and desire in the pages of Rent Boy and I Can Give You Anything But Love.
'I don’t pride myself on my honesty. I just don’t know how else to be. I don’t know how to lie. I’m not good at it,' Indiana tells Michael Bullock. Discussing everything from Catholic guilt to working as a hustler, the candid convo is everything you’d want from a rebooted BUTT.
