Rumours began to circle two years ago about an intimate documentary about Martin Margiela, but the trailer for the long-awaited film Martin Margiela: In His Own Words has finally been released; and we got to hear Margiela’s actual voice for the first time.

Margiela has been silent for 30 years but this film allows us access to his world. It’s difficult to put across the monumentality of this documentary, little is known about Margiela and interviews with the designer were strictly banned throughout his 20 years in the industry. This is the first opportunity Margiela has taken to explain himself and his work, to provide his audience with some idea behind the individual who made their clothes. For Margiela, it has always been about work and not the individual, ‘I always wanted to have my name linked to the product I created, not to the face I have.’ As he says in the trailer.

Director Reiner Holzemer - who brought us Dries (2017) - has had the mammoth task of quietly coaxing and capturing Margiela out of his shell. How did ‘fashion’s last true revolution’ come to be? How did the industry take its toll on Margiela? Will Margiela reveal himself? We hope Holzemer has probed all this and more.

The film is produced by Dogwoof and features music by dEUS, a rock band from Belgium. The release date is almost elusive as the inspiration, but we know it will be this year. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.
