Whether working with anthropomorphic bunnies or tits draped across industrial bricks, Sarah Lucas’ work has never shied away from irony or a little absurdist discomfort. It's very fitting then that Lucas’ recent Tekla collaboration - which raises funds for House of Voltaire - sees the artist reflect on her own iconic Tit Brick series, using the 2011 body of work as a creative leverage to inform 300 organic cotton terry weave towel designs.
Despite its sinister edge, (you only have to spend 10 seconds looking at Lucas’ playful work to see how her use of tights stuffed with kapok creates a rather unsettling image detailing what looks like a breast flung across the industrial materiality of brick to realise this) Lucas' now infamous Tit Brick series has been wooing the artworld for decades. Here, the objectification of the female form turns the erasure of a woman's agency into a weapon, provoking, first and foremost, a sense of ambivalence in perceiving the two materials on top of one another. Alas, one would also be wise to note the sense of empowerment in the disembodied breast prevailing over the coarseness of the brick. Tekla’s association with softness and highly sought-after home textiles creates tactility for the piece, adding new fervour to an already notable work.
Each towel comes with an exclusive canvas bag and is sold at £95, with all proceeds supporting the not-for-profit arts organisation Studio Voltaire. The towels are available for purchase at House of Voltaire and Tekla via this link.
