Taiba Akhuetie and Conor Joseph have collaborated on a visionary collection inspired by wearable art, black hair traditions and hair styling tools.

Taiba Akhuetie and Conor Joseph have collaborated on a visionary collection inspired by wearable art, black hair traditions and hair styling tools.

There's nothing Taiba Akhuetie can't do, quite frankly. From hairstylist to artist to entrepreneur, her gravity-defying hair creations have made Akhuetie a sought over creative. Recent years have seen her work with brands and titles like Burberry, Arena Homme Plus and yours truly, public figures such as FKA Twigs and Jorja Smith, in addition to founding the salon-turned-creative agency Keash Agency. Her next move? To launch a collection with jewellery designer Conor Joseph.

Inspired by the rituals of hair styling, drawing in part on Akhuetie's Nigerian background and knowledge of black hair traditions such as braiding and weave stitching, HAIRWEAR is about more than just accessories. The 24-piece collection, which has been in the making for three years, looks to redefine contemporary jewellery, creating a more active engagement between wearer and object.

Crafted from 9ct yellow gold, sterling silver and brass finished in silver and 24 karat gold plating, forms reference styling tools such as razors, together with 90s-esque butterfly clips.

'I have always been someone who looks at everyday objects as having another purpose. I am such a visually creative person, and having spent a lot of time alone thinking in 2020, I found myself looking at things very differently. Similar to when you are eating a pack of hola hoops and start putting them on your fingers like they are rings, I started using hair accessories and tools, attaching them to body parts, which sent my brain into overdrive', Akhuetie explains. 'Conor was the first person I thought to talk to about doing jewellery because I always admired his artistic approach. He immediately got it!'

Joseph, whose own clients include Erykah Badu, F.K.A Twigs and Phoebe Waller Bridge, explains that their working relationship was a fluid one. 'When Taiba rants to me about ideas, I can bring them to life and adapt them to make them wearable.' He adds that 'What I’ve really enjoyed most is learning about black styling tools and hairstyles from Taiba, which led us to create designs including pieces that mimic gelled edges.'
