Prada’s relationship with cinema is longstanding. From Adrien Brody and Tim Roth walking the A/W 12 menswear show to tapping filmmaker Nicholas Winding Refn to collaborate on a fashion film, A Touch Of Crude, and casting Scarlett Johansson as the leading lady in the surreal Galleria bag campaign, it’s clear that co-creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons are certified film buffs. Expanding their cinematic universe, the design duo have cast some of today's biggest names alongside some unexpected co-stars; flowers.
The A/W 23 campaign shot by longtime collaborator of Raf Simons, Willy Vanderperre, sees flowers blown up to human proportions. Stood alongside five global stars, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Hunter Schafer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Letitia Wright and Li Xian, the campaign presents an impossible dialogue between the actors and their botanical counterparts. As a timeless symbol of beauty, the use of flowers in this campaign conjure notions of the everyday and the extraordinary. In their otherworldly proportions among today’s A-listers, they also present paradoxical notions being both fragile and strong, ephemeral and ethereal.
The accompanying fashion film further heightens the supernatural beauty of flowers by zooming in on their vivid petals. Shifting perspective from the emotive expressions of the actors donning key pieces from Prada’s A/W 23 collection, the delicate blossoms conjure feelings of mystery, vulnerability, romance, and danger. All the makings of a Hollywood classic if you ask us.
