If you ever questioned London’s status among the Big Four — that is, the world’s fashion capitals, including New York, Milan and Paris — then the British Fashion Council’s annual NEW WAVE: Creatives list is sure to put you at ease. After all, the city is rife with emerging talents shaping not only London’s identity but fashion and culture as a whole. The annual spotlight of talents, includes industry trailblazers across a variety of disciplines, including digital art, photography, hair, make-up and more. Ahead of this year’s Fashion Awards, the BFC has just unveiled the latest 50 creative forces driving London’s fashion scene.
‘NEW WAVE: Creatives provide the industry with an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the diverse talent who play a crucial role, often behind the scenes, across the fashion industry,’ explains BFC chief executive Caroline Rush. ‘This year’s cohort is an incredible group of emerging artists whose innovative skills represent the future of creativity within fashion’.
Highlighting London’s position as an international hub of creativity the list of trailblazers not only celebrates these emerging talents, it also provides the industry with a dossier of names elevating their portfolio to a global stage. Voting for this year was conducted by a panel of industry professionals, including several familiar SHOWstudio collaborators like editor-in-chief of Wonderland Toni Blaze and founder of A-COLD-WALL* Samuel Ross.
The initiative has previously highlighted talents that went on to become some of fashion’s biggest names including Dazed editor-in-chief Ib Kamara and photographer Rafael Pavarotti. Poet and activist Kai Isaiah-Jamal, who previously created a fashion film for SHOWstudio’s Bodies of Knowledge project was also featured along with artist and writer Wilson Oryema who has also previously worked with SHOWstudio.
This year’s NEW WAVE: Creatives will be celebrated as part of The Fashion Awards on 4 December at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Discover the full list here.
