This weekend will see artist Nicasio Torres exhibit his interactive mural as part of the Fantastic Toiles pop-up. Below we've compiled a simple step-by-step guide to interacting with the unique installation.
Attracted to his unique visual aesthetic, SHOWstudio invited Spanish artist Nicasio Torres to respond to the creative vision underpinned by the DIY spirit of the Fantastic Toiles collective by creating an interactive mural punctuated with 90 one-of-a-kind works.
Wanting to emulate some sort of artist exchange where the public can get involved in defacing and adding to the work on display, Torres came up with the idea of an interactive mural made up of the 90 artworks available to buy at the Fantastic Toiles X SHOWstudio pop-up. As people buy the works on show and numbers dwindle, the idea is that the side-by-side artworks will slowly peel away and change to reveal a new painting underneath which will then make up an even bigger, more cohesive installation not-for-sale. We also heavily encourage those who have bought an artwork to deface the revealing space so the mural can unpredictably change as shoppers add to and subtract from it.
So you’ve decided you want to buy an original Fantastic-Toiles inspired artwork by Nicasio Torres for just £25. Here’s what to do next:
- Choose your favourite Fantastic Toiles-inspired original artwork by Nicasio Torres on the wall.
- Once you’ve selected from the available artworks. Take down your chosen one.
- Pay for it (important). Please note, we operate using card only!
- Once the artwork has been bought and peeled away, look at the number tacked to the wall.
- Replace the now-empty space with the appropriately numbered 17.5x25cm card on the table. (For example, if number five is written on the wall, choose a card from the box that also has a number five written on the back.)
- Before you attach this new card to the same spot, feel free to make it your own! Scribble on it, deface it, add colour to it - go wild.
- Pin the newly defaced piece of work with some sellotape to the same patch on the wall, replacing the spot you’ve just taken from.
- If you hang around long enough to watch many others repeat this process, you’ll slowly see how one larger image will start to appear, made from all of the replaced vandalised artworks.
- Congratulations! You’ve taken part in SHOWstudio’s art exchange project.
Fantastic Toiles is open on 29-30 April from 11:00-19:00 at SHOWstudio 22D Ebury Street, SW1W 0LU.
