V&A Announce Partnership With Brand-of-the-Moment Orange Culture For Next Fashion in Motion Event

As I write this, racists and fascists are banding together up and down the country, gathering in their thousands to protest against migrants rights to safety. For black and poc creatives support - of any kind - has never been so integral; it is our responsibility to protect all communities.

Making its debut at the V&A, Orange Culture's latest collection, (brainchild of Nigerian-born fashion designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal) will be taking over the V&A’s Raphael Court, as part of the museum’s next Fashion in Motion series on 16 August. Exploring the battle for acceptance faced by migrants settling in a new country - one that's more timely than ever - the collection is inspired by Oke-Lawal’s own journey to create a version of home in a new destination and find community. As the designer's own memories serve as the starting point for each piece in the collection, discourse such as nostalgia as a place of safety is touched upon and set free, inspired by the gardens of his childhood memories that gave him and his siblings a safe space in which to climb trees and play in nature.

Gaza: A Story of Love and War

FILM SCREENING AND DIRECTOR Q&A

Why Gaza: A Story of Love and War Is This Summer's Must-Watch

Telling the story of war and its truths - no matter how ugly - can be an almost impossible challenge... particularly if tackled without bias. Alas, that hasn't stopped Welsh-Jewish film-maker Mike Joseph, whose latest body of work Gaza: A Story of Love and War offers compassion, empathy and consideration to both sides effected in this Israel-Gaza conflict. 'The two men emphasise how much they have in common as children of trauma, rather than what might divide them' wrote The Guardian in their review. 'And there is no doubt that – like so many liberal Jews looking at what’s happening in horror – Joseph is appalled to see the descendants of the Holocaust killing another people on a mass scale.' Cutting through the blatant racism and misinformation out there, the documentary film focuses on propelling the stories of two journalists who are caught in the thick of it; Joseph and Sami Abu Salem, a Palestinian reporter living in Gaza. Interested? Head down to the Hackney Picturehouse on 14 August to watch the two hour documentary and listen to the Q&A with the director himself afterwards. For more information, click here.

EXHIBITION

Recount Biba's Heydays at the Fashion and Textile Museum

Picture this: It's 1967 and you've just turned 18. Your mum has promised to celebrate by buying you one of fashion's hottest items - the mini skirt. Where do you go? The only place there is to go, Biba.

Throughout the 1960s and early 70s, Biba blossomed into a fashion phenomenon, becoming the world’s first lifestyle label before it closed its doors for good in 1975. But how did it do it? Displaying fantastic archival pieces of clothing alongside original photographs, film, and material - all of which have been personally chosen by designer Barbara Hulanicki - the Fashion and Textile Museum's latest exhibition retells the story of one of the high street's most adored department stores of all time.
