It was certainly a shock to the fashion industry when insiders learned of Sarah Burton's departure after 26 years at Alexander McQueen, which was swiftly followed by an emotional bow and a poignant final show for the brand's S/S 24 womenswear collection. However, as ever, fashion moves quickly; a statement proved true by Kering confirming Burton's successor to be Irish designer and Central Saint Martins alum Seán McGirr.

Seán McGirr

Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault said of the decision in the following statement:

'Alexander McQueen is a House we are passionate about, and we are confident that Seán McGirr will be able to pursue its journey with a new creative impetus. We look forward to opening this new chapter in the history of this unique brand.'

Although McGirr's appointment may be somewhat unexpected, the young designer doesn't come without an impressive resume. His previous role was as head of ready-to-wear at JW Anderson, and before that, McGirr held a position at Dries Van Noten.

Burton was made creative director following the death of Lee Alexander McQueen in 2010, with her position being a huge role for anyone to fill. Whatever move Seán McGirr decides to make, the world will be watching in anticipation.
