It was during the Dutch Golden Age that Tulips became synonymous with Amsterdam. The flower du jour of 17th-century society saw prices for bulbs grow to exorbitant levels before eventually crashing, leading many into financial ruin. At its peak, the humble Tulip was a coveted status symbol with the event dubbed Tulip Mania and the flower becoming a cultural icon.
Fast forward to today and it’s Japanese designer Chitose Abe who has found inspiration in the Tulip mania. Teaming up with London-based jewellery brand Bunney and industrial designer Eugene Whang, sacai has dreamed up a capsule collection around the bountiful bud, including a workwear reimagining of a florist’s uniform.
At the core of the collection is the ‘Aperture Vase’ crafted from sterling silver. Playing with light and reflection, the high-polish and hand-planished finishes showcase the level of craftsmanship from Bunney’s London workshops. Adding an ornate quality to the industrial design is a gilded 24-carat gold interior.
The collection also features an 18-carat gold brooch shaped like a tulip. Adorned with 246 gemstones, including diamonds and rubies, set across both white and yellow gold, the style pays homage to the opulent illustrations from the time of Tulip Mania.
Completing the collaborative project is a sacai collection themed around a contemporary florist's uniform. Featuring a Workshop Coat, Tulip-Embroidered Cap, and Bouquet Carrier, each piece is crafted from water and stain-resistant tri-layer material, adorned with Bunney's signature hand-hammered silver snaps. Complementing these garments are bespoke t-shirts adorned with custom tulip motif embroidery, alongside the iconic sacai print t-shirt.
