Fashion and film share a storied history, with silver-screen icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly leading the charge through their timeless elegance and close collaborations with legendary couturiers such as Hubert de Givenchy and Christian Dior. They harnessed the transformative power of fashion to spark dreams of the fantastical and elevate the art of storytelling (on and off the big screen). No event epitomises this captivating relationship better than the annual LACMA Art+Film Gala.
This year, among the array of celebrities adorned in Gucci ensembles, creative director Sabato De Sarno unveiled his second evening wear collection for the brand, aptly named Gucci Notte (Italian for night), inspired by the enduring allure of Hollywood glamour.
As a stunning follow-up to his Ancora Notte collection from last year’s gala, Gucci Notte epitomises the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship. Featuring shimmering sequins, intricate beading, and flouncing feathers, the collection pays homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood, with delightful nods to Cleopatra and the Ziegfeld Follies. Each piece narrates its own story, blending opulence with theatricality and inviting audiences into a realm where fantasy and glamour reign supreme.
Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Salma Hayek, Anora star Mikey Madison, and Charli xcx (who also performed that evening) was a curated group of models who embodied the spirit of the collection. Dressed in striking ensembles that captured the sultry femininity at the heart of De Sarno’s Gucci, they glided through the iconic Chris Burden sculpture Urban Light, their silhouettes illuminated by the soft glow of the vintage lamps, embodying the essence of modern red carpet dressing.
Their outfits featured ornate columnar dresses adorned with intricate embellishments and fluid silhouettes, evoking the glamour of the 1920s flappers. With flowing fabrics and daring cut-outs, each look celebrated the carefree spirit of the Jazz Age, making a bold statement that seamlessly bridged past and present, while enchanting gala-goers. As flashes from cameras illuminated the scene, it became clear that these ensembles were more than just clothing—they were a celebration of individuality and a nod to the enduring influence of fashion history, positioning the models as modern muses echoing the allure of a glamorous past.
Since his appointment as creative director following Alessandro Michele's departure last year, Sabato De Sarno’s Gucci has navigated a challenging landscape. However, it is within his evening wear collections that the Italian designer’s exceptional eye for detail truly comes to life. With each gown that hits the red carpet, De Sarno isn’t just crafting clothes; he’s weaving a spell that reminds us all that in the world of fashion, just like in film, the only limit is your imagination.
