With a primary focus on collecting American photography archives from the twentieth century, the Muus Collection's latest body of work pays homage to the photographs of artist Rosalind Fox Solomon. Presented as part of Paris Photo, the archive's latest exhibition Rosalind Fox Solomon: The Early Work is a solo exhibition showcasing one of the artist’s earliest projects, made between 1972 and 1976 at the Scottsboro Alabama First Mondays Market.

Later to the game than some, Solomon began experimenting with photography age 40, while living in Chattanooga, Tennesssee. It was during this period Solomon regularly attended a flea market in Scottsboro, frequently photographing the market and its contents, focusing her lens on anything from broken dolls, their vendors and other frequenters of the market. In the early 1970’s, Solomon had begun to study under the tutelage of Lisette Model, who would go on to become her life-long mentor and help her hone her craft.

In addition to the exhibition, Galerie Julian Sander will present another solo exhibition of the artists, instead focusing on Solomon's later works, including Portraits in the time of AIDS (1987-1988); Catalin Valentin’s Lamb, a collaborative project with artist Richard Minsky; and a selection of later works from the 1990s right up to 2016.

With a body of work spanning a period of over 50 years, from the American South to India, Guatemala, Brazil, and beyond, Solomon has managed to gain access to closed circles and communities through her intuitiveness and persistent curiosity, rejecting stereotypes and preconceived notions by depicting her subjects with an unflinching honesty.

As part of the Elles x Paris Photo program and conversation series, Rosalind Fox Solomon will discuss her work with Sarah Meister, executive director of the Aperture Foundation on 10 November at 17:00 CET.
