Designer Nicolas Ghesquière speaks out against Trump appearance at LV factory opening.

Last Thursday the US President, Donald Trump, made a ribbon-cutting appearance at the opening of a new Louis Vuitton factory in Texas. Appearing alongside LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault and Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke, Trump made people around the world cringe at his questionable pronunciation of ‘Looie Vooton’ but also brought to mind the inevitable political message that comes with such an association.

With Louis Vuitton as LVMH’s flagship fashion label, it’s notable that their Artistic Director of Women’s Collections, Nicolas Ghesquière took to Instagram to express his disdain at the event and to make clear his unwillingness to be associated with the president. Posting the cover of Evelyn Thomas’ High Energy - a prominent gay club song from the mid 80s - Ghesquière wrote, ‘Standing against any political action. I am a fashion designer refusing this association’ followed by the hashtags #trumpisajoke and #homophobia.
