'Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Film' Trailer Released
While the initial scheduled release date for Kanye West's latest album has been and gone, the trailer for the accompanying film, Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Film, was released yesterday evening on Kanye West's Youtube channel and by IMAX, giving a film release date of 25 October 2019. Tickets have now gone on sale at IMAX for film screenings - the cinema which will be exclusively showing the film across the U.S and the U.K over the weekend of 25 October 2019.
The one minute video trailer gives little away about the film's contents, although there is a glimpse of an interior ribbed section of artist James Turrell's installation Roden Crater that's not open to the public.
As the camera moves towards a bright white light framed by a circular opening and led up to by what appear to be steps, the rising voices of a gospel choir sing a harmony which soon breaks into the repeated words: 'Saved by his grace. It's in his will, by faith revealed. It's in his will.' As a holy white light increases in brightness, both tempting us to see what lies outside and blinding our sight, the screen switches to a concentrated primary blue.
A line from the Bible Mark 1:15 reads in yellow: 'The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel', which together with the music suggests the film to be a meditation on gospel. The trailer is also teasing our ears with what may be to come for West's ninth studio album of the same name, yet to be released.
It perhaps gives a glimpse into West's fabled Sunday Service, the invite-only religious gatherings held since January 2019 where guests join in a live band and choir for gospel renditions of songs from West's catalogue, R&B and re-arrangements of existing gospel where the American musician and designer West takes the role of preacher.
Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Film shows exclusively in iMax cinemas 25-27 October 2019.
