Including appearances from the likes of Susie Cave, Sonny Hall, Rupert Everett and more, Jimmy Lux Fox and Lucca Lutzky's new short film Fragments Segments Vestiges is an allegorical ode to the poetry of cinema.
Divided into 10 acts, Fragments Segments Vestiges is as much a poem as it is a short film. Marking the first collaboration between artists Jimmy Lux Fox and Lucca Lutzky, the work - currently on show at Ladbroke Hall in London - features cameos from a number of industry greats, including David Morrissey, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Sonny Hall, Devon Ross, Rupert Everett, and Susie Cave (Bick).
Each act responds to a prose poem, corroborating with the overriding theme of absences: the absence of spoken words, conventional ways of connecting stories, of main characters. Coming full circle, the writing and film segments themselves slowly narrate a collection of lost relationships which come together to tell a story as the strange force of mundane situations is interpreted into a wider, more spectacular theme that comments on the everyday.
Not only poetic in its inspiration, Fragments Segments Vestiges pays homage to the beauty of painting as each frame can be seen as a piece of art in its own right. The desolate ambience of the filming locations, accompanied by heightened environmental sounds, creates a distinct dreamscape for each act, led by the silent performance of the actors that transport you into another world.
Accompanying the installation is a limited edition book comprising a selection of the stills and writing; each copy contains an original fragment of the 16mm negative with which the project was shot. Melancholic, poetic, nostalgic and beautiful, Fragments Segments Vestiges doesn't just take from poetry; it is poetry.
