London nightlife’s beloved Cozette McCreery goes there and back again in her new image book titled Snap! The renowned East End knitwear designer — Sibling anyone? — and Door Whore — Richard Mortimer’s BoomBox anyone? — ventures into the world of monographs with a new self-published, self-observed, 160-page series of Cozette McCreery in WAYWT mode. From 2009 to 2022, McCreery used her iPhone versions 8 and 11 to snap 80 bathroom selfies before leaving her flat. Her approach punctures the earnest balloon of GRWM social media reels whose best practices prioritise algorithm-approved angles, text and aesthetics for inoffensive content.

Snap! by Cozette McCreery

Perhaps McCreery's lighting is lo-fi or the smudgy resos from her iPhone lenses resemble that Vaseline-effect RuPaul’s Drag Race S1 moment. She celebrates a decided messiness from club cults' style and vision to place speed over precision, just as long as your clothes are sorted properly. McCreery’s new book believes that any smartphone filter is actual life capturing actual style in actual motion, social media likes be damned.

The Snap! photo book comprises part of Paul Bernstock and Thelma Speirs' OUT OF FASHION exhibition that extracts the spaces between art and fashion. The London milliners, who topped Kylie Minogue for Kylie plus Martine Rose and Sibling catwalks, will present a group art show featuring their work alongside McCreery’s own plus Miniki Cheng, Blue Farrier, Miguel Angel Ferrer and Kavel Rafferty. Bring your best selfie to join McCreery, check out her new book Snap! and the accompanying OUT OF FASHION exhibit, which launches at Gallery 46 tonight.

Snap! and OUT OF FASHION start tonight, 5 December from 6 to 10pm at Gallery 46, located at 46 Ashfield Street, E1 2AJ.
