Martine Syms and PAM Collage Art and Fashion on Film
There's a delicious, digital tactility to the fashion films Australian fashion and concept brand PAM (Perks and Mini), co-founded by Misha Hollenbach and Shauna Toohey just shy of 10 years ago, have been creating in line with their own collections and capsules. Their latest collaboration, with the LA-based conceptual artist Martine Syms, combines a shared obsession with image, collage and identity.
This meaningful capsule and accompanying film was a natural meeting of minds. Clothes includes PAM signatures such as a spiral construction technique, and feature digital prints of Syms' selfies in the artist's signature collaging. 'We love Martine! [We love] her energy, her mind, her sense of fun and effortless communication', Hollenbach says of the process of working together on the A/W 24 capsule of t-shirts, reversible dresses, caps, socks and accessories, which launches in line with Syms' exhibition Total opening in Paris this week at Lafayette Anticipations.
Syms, the renowned artist who has shown work at galleries including MoMa (New York) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), and collaborated with fashion brands including Études Studio, creates points of familiarity and confrontation in her work. In this new work for PAM, Syms' images translate seamlessly into the campaign film, which layer together different frames shot in the style of a personal home video tape moving from inside a house to the streets of LA.
'I’ve always been very particular about the way I dress', Syms tells SHOWstudio. 'I love clothes and frequently use my old clothes in my artwork. They’re figures. I also use other people’s old clothes, like Janet Jackson’s for example. I’m a big design nerd and love personal style. I like how people use clothes to communicate or feel a certain way. Sometimes I think I do it all for garms. And the children.'
The capsule is available to shop now online, plus in select stockists and PAM Store Melbourne & Sydney.
