It’s no secret that women’s football has long taken a backseat to its male counterpart. Well, that’s all about to change as the world sets its sights on Australia and New Zealand for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. One sports fan in particular is none other than the crown jewel of London Fashion Week, Martine Rose who is continuing her longstanding creative partnership with Nike by unveiling a collection of genderless tailoring inspired by the nation’s favourite sport. Known for her imaginative take on sportswear, its Rose's subversive tailoring that's taking centre stage in her most recent offering with Nike. Already revered within fashion circles for using her platform to highlight fringe communities, the London designer is using her partnership with the sportswear giant to put the spotlight on women's football.
‘The culture of football has continuously been a major part of my collections. I have always referenced football. It has been a massive learning curve and an eye-opener for me, understanding women’s football specifically, and that has been a journey I have gone through with Nike over the past few years', Rose explains.
The capsule follows her 2021 Nike collection dubbed 'The Lost Lionesses’ which was a tribute to England’s 1971 women’s team. The following year, she released the campaign for her wildly popular Nike Shox MR4 which featured the likes of Hope Powell (the first full-time England Women coach and first black England coach) and Ruth Ruana (the footballer who went viral for breastfeeding her daughter in the dugout).
This time around Rose draws on traditional tropes of British tailoring which she’s adorned with some of her tried and true signatures. Made in Italy from 100% wool, the Player’s suit jacket features the brand’s ‘M’ pattern all-over, while the trousers are stamped with a Nike x Martine Rose tag riffing on the Authentic Team Label found on Nike Football replica kits. The trench coat takes its football inspiration to the next level, featuring extra sleeves which can be tied at the front as a nod to football scarves worn by fans at shows. Finally, the dress shirt in the collection features a new Martine Rose crest inspired by the Croydon coat of arms (where the designer was born).
The 2023 Nike x Martine Rose collection will be available globally starting 25 July onmartine-rose.com and via Nike and select stockists from 27 July.
