The global art and culture platform has collaborated with Burberry for their latest photo series Together and One, brandishing rich truths of the individual and the collective in Africa.
In celebration of Black History Month last month, Manju Journal collaborated with British luxury house Burberry to piece together the fragments of black identity and history shared in Africa and across the continent, brandishing rich truths of the individual and the collective in Africa, peeling away from the scrutinised western interpretation ascribed to blackness.
The photo series is a joyful celebration of the black experience, getting to the very heart of what it means to be black while celebrating the unique cultural significances along the way. Removed of all rigidity that is too often synonymous with archaic depictions of blackness, the series was led by creatives Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-Nti, Kusi Kubi and Richmond Orlando Mensah while inspired by pioneering photographers Kwame Brathwaite and Philip Kwame Apagya, both known for contributing to the empowerment of black beauty, movement and style.
In a press release, Manju Journal wrote:
'Kwabena's visceral approach is one of veracity, and void of an othering, personal integrity and power are visualised in each image, a leap from the impassive rigidity of archaic depictions of blackness. Together and One initiates a new narrative of cultural and national pride, one that further considers the collaged and harsh realities of everyday life. Each image stands alone and within the collection, foregrounding and questioning the differing dynamics of class, wealth, mental health, education, motherhood and unity.'
Rooted in values that side with the idea that 'the best progress can be slow progress', Together and One portrays the entangled ideals of the African continent and, more specifically, Ghana, going above and beyond to reflect on matters Africa holds dear in a divine celebration laced with love. It's essential to note Together and One is a love letter to the African continent, valid throughout every month of the year and beyond, not just for Black History Month.
