MACHINE-B, the brainchild of vintage brand Byronesque and London-based concept store MACHINE-A, is back with a brand new initiative reviving iconic design from the past. The third instalment of the innovative project, The Reissues Series, will revive archival designs from designers of the past kicking off with the legendary 2000s design collective, threeASFOUR.
Founded by Gabi Asfour, Ange Donhauser, Adi Gil, and Kai Khune (who left to persue his own creative endeavours) in 1998, the cohort established themselves as avant-garde pioneers with a penchant for pushing boundaries. Renowned for their experimental approach, threeASFOUR's designs seamlessly blend geometry, spirituality, and cultural influences, creating garments that transcend conventional fashion norms. Their innovative spirit made them pioneers of downtown New York’s fashion scene in the early aughts, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression in fashion.
The As FOUR Circle Bag, an emblem of avant-garde design, takes centre stage as the inaugural piece for The Reissue Series. This marks a significant reunion as the original quartet of designers collaborates for the first time since 2005. The announcement is accompanied by a series of captivating photographs, skillfully shot by Miguel Villalobos, a member of their tribe at the time. Each designer is individually captured at their favourite downtown locations, adorned with the reissued As FOUR Circle Bag.
’They’re still so relevant and so copied’, says longtime threeASFOUR supporter and editor of Paper Magazine Mickey Boardman. ‘I have to say, the circle bag to me, at the time, I remember thinking wow this could really be the thing that takes them to a new place because they’re very understandable and it’s the kind of thing that a person with an otherwise pretty average look, what could be considered a ‘normal’ look, could use the bag and wear it and work the bag into it and feel like they were living the life, having a piece of the avant-garde lifestyle with that bag’.
Founder of MACHINE-A, Stavor Karelis echoed Boardman’s thoughts by stating: ‘threeASFOUR’s significant impact in design has created, apart from a cult following, a culture that went across and beyond of New York, to reach a global audience that appreciates fashion in its pure form’.
MACHINE-B’s The Reissue Series: As FOUR Bags launches 11 December in store and online at MACHINE-A.com.
