For many, it’s Takashi Murakami’s multicolour Speedy or Jeff Koon’s Da Vinci Neverfull that first springs to mind when thinking of Louis Vuitton’s numerous artistic collaborations. Yet, that only scratches the surface of the maison’s dalliance with the art world over the course of nearly two centuries since the storied leather brand was founded. To celebrate its array of artist collaborations Louis Vuitton is opening what it dubs a ‘cultural and touristic destination’ called LV Dream on 12 December.
Located at the former site of Paris’ very first department store, the Belle Jardinière, LV Dream welcomes visitors to discover the rich history of Louis Vuitton’s collaborations through time. From Richard Prince to Yayoi Kusama, across nine rooms of varying themes, LV Dream exhibits a collection of work to rival Paris' renowned galleries. In Louis Vuitton: As Seen By portraits you can find portraits of the maison's founder by contemporary artists including Yan Pei Mind, and Alex Katz. For fans of the avant-garde, The World of Vuitton According to Rei is a room dedicated to the collaborations by Comme des Garçons artistic director Rei Kawakubo in 2008 and in 2014. In Reinterpreting Icons, the spotlight is put on designers, artists, and creative minds who have all reinterpreted the instantly recognisable Monogram. Karl Lagerfeld’s 'Punching Bag', Cindy Sherman’s 'Studio Trunk', Frank Gehry’s 'Twisted Bo', Christian Louboutin’s 'Shopping Bag' and more will all be on display.
When finished viewing the vast collection, LV Dream invites visitors to unwind at the dedicated café and chocolaterie, Maxime Frédéric at Louis Vuitton. Further celebrating the brand's iconic accessories, expect pastries shaped like stacked trunks, and chocolates stamped with the brand's monogram. And like every great museum in the city, don't forget to exit through the giftshop which promises to be stocked with exclusive merch including luggage tags, and cardholders to commemorate your visit to LV Dream.
LV Dream opens on 12 December at 2 rue du Pont Neuf.
