Lou Stoppard & Adam Murray Explore Northern England's Impact on Fashion
Former SHOWstudio Editor, Lou Stoppard and Adam Murray curated an exhibition examining the contemporary artistic and stylistic representations of Northern England. Initially exhibited at the Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool and Somerset House, London, the exhibition will tour to The Civic, Barnsley. North: Fashioning Identity covers work from the forties up to the present day, displaying photographs, artworks and fashion collections in which the style, ideas and tropes of England's northern region are distilled. International designers' work is featured to evidence the North's global influence.
To accompany the exhibition, an online project was created on SHOWstudio, North, which encompasses a series of interviews with key creative practitioners – including Simon Foxton, Claire Barrow and Gareth Pugh – who discuss the influence of the North on their work. The project also includes essays examining the effect geography has on ideas, dissecting everything from gender roles to creative output.
North: Fashioning Identity which was first exhibited in 2017, will show at The Civic, from 14 September to 21 December 2019.
