The avant-garde designer has teamed up with international art gallery Morán Morán to create OTTO 958 and are ready to release their first ASICS trainer the Gel-Flexkee 958.
Since his first design for ASICS hit the runway as part of his S/S 18 collection, Kiko Kostadinov has been breathing new life into the Japanese sportswear brand. Fast forward to countless innovative trainers, the Bulgarian designer is doing more than taking cues from the art world for his latest drop, he’s collaborating with international art gallery Morán Morán. Dubbed OTTO 958, the new creative project between Kostadinov and the Los Angeles-based gallery sees the duo unveil the highly anticipated Gel-Flexkee 985.
In a fashion film shared exclusively with SHOWstudio, the Gel-Flexkee 985 is showcased on the midwest farm owned by artists Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, as well as in action at the skatepark. Directed by Paride Calvia and Filmed on location in Athens, Ohio, USA Modeled by Trevor Sells.
'Thank you to Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin for generously allowing us to play in their amusement park. Special thanks to Ria Pastor, Alison Powell, and Adam Trecartin for making us feel at home in Ohio,' said the Kiko Kostadinov team.
Appropriately, the reinterpretation of ASICS’ Flexkee silhouette was inspired by the movements of athletes in skateboarding competitions. Research done at the ASICS Sports Engineering Laboratory informed the model’s highly functional midsole and asymmetric lacing system. Still, it’s the full-leather construction and quilted toe box that adds that luxurious quality that Kostadinov’s designs are known for.
While Kostadinov is also known for his distinct colour combinations, the Gel-Flexkee 985 keeps it simple with two colour ways, gunmetal/black and green/black. Of course, always keeping us on our ASICS-clad toes, the brand has confirmed a third colourway will be released later this year.
The Gel-Flexkee 985 will be released on 7 September.
