Did you know in Stanley Kubrick’s magnum opus Eyes Wide Shut, the paintings featured in the film were by none other than the auteur’s wife Christiane Kubrick? The artist’s vivid still lifes adorn the domestic scenes, proving a stark contrast to the film's darker, more enigmatic themes. Inspired by this juxtaposition, designer Jonathan Anderson centred the A/W 24 menswear and pre-fall 2024 womenswear collections of his eponymous label around Kubrick’s playful paintings.
Originally a dancer and actress the German actress embraced her true passion for painting, producing evocative works that veer on kitsch. Works like View from camper towards Aoelian Island, a scene of a beach from the view of a caravan, and Plants on red plastic tray, a still life of autumnal tones, showcases the artist’s eye for colour, while Polly the cat is a prime example of her ability to infuse everyday subjects with a sense of whimsy and charm. These are just three of the works featured on JW Anderson jumpers, t-shirts and dresses.
To celebrate the release of the collaboration, JW Anderson has teamed up with cult favourite retailer Dover Street Market on an exclusive installation based on View from camper towards Aoelian Island, and a short film ‘Who is the Painter?’. The latter, directed by Jack Elliot Hobbs (Kubrick’s grandson), features a conversation between Christian Kubrick and Jonathan Anderson, providing insights into the collaboration and the work of the artist and the designer.
