Issey Miyake Joins The New Balance Family
When it comes to blurring the lines between sportswear and high-fashion, is there a shoe brand doing it as tastefully as New Balance? The American footwear brand has had no shortage of influential talents to reimagine their signature silhouettes, with the latest being the creative director of Issey Miyake, Satoshi Kondo.
As their first collaboration with the footwear giants, the Issey Miyake x New Balance MT10O was unveiled at the brand’s S/S 24 runway show at Paris Fashion Week. The minimalist design comes from New Balance’s MT10, a trail running shoe defined by its form-fitting silhouette. Inspired by barefoot mobility, it’s a stark contrast to the chunky trainer trend that’s defined footwear in recent years.
Originally designed to provide the sensation of running barefoot while ensuring protection and traction for off-road running adventures, the MT10O emphasises minimal cushioning and a close-to-ground experience. Issey Miyake refines the practical model with fresh materials, a subdued colour palette, and sleek design details, including co-branded logos on the insole.
The upper of the MT10O combines lightweight, breathable mesh with supple premium leather, striking a perfect balance between comfort and durability. Thin cord-like shoelaces complement the minimalist design while ensuring functionality. To enhance abrasion resistance, the vamp strap and foxing utilise high-quality rubber.
The midsole of the MT10O maintains its minimal cushioning but has been firmed up to provide a stable platform ideal for off-road running. Meanwhile, the outsole is meticulously designed with a focus on grip and durability. Featuring protruding shapes to enhance traction on various terrains, whether urban or natural, the outsole utilizes rubber made by Vibram, renowned for its superior grip and durability.
The collaboration between New Balance and Issey Miyake marks an exciting fusion of athletic performance and high fashion, resulting in a trail running shoe that not only delivers on functionality but also exudes style and sophistication. With the redesigned MT10O, runners can now embark on their off-road adventures with confidence, knowing they have the perfect blend of form and function at their feet.
The Issey Miyake x New Balance MT10O will be available on 15 May in Japan and 14 June worldwide.
