Known throughout his career for participating in many exhibitions that brought Japanese design overseas, Tanaka was arguably one of Japan's top graphic designers, just as the late Issey Miyake was one of the country's greats; with both their work still influencing the world design of today hence Tanaka's project with the brand still going strong in its seventh year.
Bold and blooming flowers mark the sixth collection between Ikko Tanaka and Issey Miyake as various materials and techniques are implored to rise above previous releases. However, Tanaka's bold use of colour and patterns that beautifully contrasts with Issey Miyake is here to stay.
'I simply wanted to paint single, large flowers in full bloom', Tanaka stated in a press release, with those specific large flowers bearing a resemblance to lustrous peonies and irises, where the latter suggests the influence of the Rinpa School on Tanaka. The compelling images and elaborate use of colour found in the compositions inspire not only the wearers but also the people around them as they bring a sense of joy and wonder, invigorating people in their everyday lives.
