Inside artist Hajime Sorayam's Latest Stella McCartney Collaboration

During lockdown, British fashion designer Stella McCartney reached out to 26 artists and asked them if they'd make an artwork relating to one letter of the alphabet, subsequently creating an A to Z Manifesto. One of those artists was Hajime Sorayama, a longtime friend and collaborative partner of McCartney. Their next venture? A capsule collection aptly titled Stella McCartney + Sorayama, comprising of silver strawberries, ‘Platinum Dream’ slogans and the artist's signature Sexy Robots.

'I came across Sorayama’s work in the late 90s when I was living in Paris and was absolutely mesmerised by its cheeky sensuality and airbrushed quality', noted McCartney in a statement to press. 'I met with him when I was next in Japan; we have been friends, and I have been collecting his art ever since. He makes me laugh in a naughty way, and I hope this capsule communicates the playfulness and mutual admiration we have between us.'

In true Stella McCartney style, the limited edition capsule collection uses fashion and art to communicate the importance of sustainability to the next generation via 'genderless, ageless and effortless Stella staples'. Key items include varsity jackets made from repurposed deadstock fabrics, organic cotton denim sets and an adorned selection of knitwear.

Fronting the campaign is Iris Law; yet another creative who shares McCartney's mission in speaking to fashion's future change-makers. Commenting on McCartney's dedication to paving the way for fashion's sustainable future, Sorayama commented, 'I don’t know much about fashion but I do know Stella has put her heart and soul into the brand and built it with extraordinary passion and determination.'

The Stella McCartney + Sorayama capsule collection will arrive in two drops over the Christmas period - the first in December 2023 and the second in January 2024.
