Hospital Rooms is an arts and mental health charity that commissions unique and individual artworks for NHS mental health inpatient units across the UK. Their aim? No matter how dark times may seem, they believe that all people in mental health wards should have access to experience the joys that art can bring, never mind how small. Hospital Rooms' message is clear: they believe in the power of art to delight and heal, excite and stimulate. After all, if art can't do that, what can it do?
This Thursday at 12:00 GMT, Hospital Rooms is excitingly launching a brand new poster made in collaboration with the one and only SHOWstudio founder and legendary image-maker, Nick Knight. (Note, the artwork will strictly only be available for one week only, no exceptions.)
16 artists and designers have been commissioned in the past by the Hospital Rooms charity to create site-specific installations to brighten NHS mental health spaces. It's long been known that there is a connection between experiencing art and lifting mental health, so the charity also runs a free digital art school that involves weekly workshops led by more than 30 internationally acclaimed artists. Through this, the charity hopes to provide a creative outlet for patients in mental health units and the public. In support of these workshops, Hospital Rooms' online shop will be selling a new collection of limited-edition works in which Nick Knight's print will be included amongst Sonia Boyce and other creatives' prolific work.
Hospital Rooms made a name for themselves amongst the art community when their first artist posters, with Anish Kapoor, sold out in less than two minutes flat. Impressive much? After a year of the arts industry being bashed left, right and centre by the government due to not being viewed as 'necessary to the economy,' it's nice to know that charities such as Hospital Rooms believe in art's power to heal and comfort in times of need.
The works will be available here from Thursday 25 February.
