Since Matthew M. Williams joined Givenchy as creative director in 2020 the American designer has been carving out his own identity for the brand. His direction has been rooted in the utilitarian streetwear that he was known for previously but this time imbued with sharp tailoring. While always looking to the future, Williams' is proving he isn't afraid to reference the past. Case in point: for his A/W 23 campaign, Williams was inspired by the golden age of haute couture (the 1950s and 1960s) and has cast models Mona Tougard, Karoline Spakowski and Liu Wen as the maison’s global brand ambassadors.

‘I wanted to express Givenchy’s new elegance by taking cues from our past and adapting them to the present’, Williams explained in today’s press release. ‘The look focuses on confidence, comfort and empowerment, three concepts that are integral to the House’s codes.

Shot by Heji Shin, the campaign features key pieces from Williams’ A/W 23 collection with a strong emphasis on razor-sharp tailoring. Still, the 1017 ALYX 9SM founder is known for his utilitarian side which comes through in the accessories he’s created for the maison. Most notably the Voyou which has officially reached it-bag status as a fashion week street style fixture.
